This Week’s Music Selection from Heidi Dybing

A few years ago the cast for Over the Back Fence was brainstorming on the content of next month’s show.  The theme was “the color white”.  The song that immediately came to mind was A Whiter Shade of Pale.  Someone goggled the words, read them aloud and we decided I should play a piano solo version instead of singing it!  What is a “vestal virgin” anyway????

The original version was composed by the band Procol Harum in 1967.  Procol Harum, loosely translated from Latin, means “beyond these things.”  Seems appropriate!

As an aside, the melody is based on music by John Sebastian Bach.  You can hear that if you listen closely.

I will leave you with the final lines of the chorus, which I kind of like….”And so it was that later as the miller told his tale….That her face at first just ghostly turned a whiter shade of pale.”  Very descriptive!
